• Harpo Does Something Funny: Al is played by the Mountain Goats singer and songwriter John Darnielle, and many of the lyrics for Al's songs were made up by Darnielle on the spot.
• Irony as She Is Cast: Everyone hates Al's songs and Ruby refuses to use any of them in Doxxxology's set. Ruby's songs are, if anything, worse, with less interesting construction, but Al's are painfully personal and revelatory, including a song about his messy divorce that sounds like 'No Children' had all the poetry sucked out of it.
