• Write What You Know: Tom Kratman is a retired infantry lieutenant-colonel in the US Army, who describes the military hierarchy with first-hand knowledge—he even worked in recruiting at one point. Though presumably, he met no talking magic swords during his term, so that element of the story should probably be chalked up to creative imagination.
