  • What Could Have Been: Of an unusual caliber; in 1974, David Bowie of all people commissioned Rockwell to paint the cover art for his then-upcoming album Young Americans, believing that the illustrator's famed focus on Americana fit the album's sarcastic outlook on the subject and America-centric soul sound. However, Bowie ended up rescinding the offer once Rockwell informed him that he would need at least six months to complete the painting—which would have delayed the album's release—and subsequently went with a Golden Age of Hollywood-esque glamour photo of himself instead.
