Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Johnny says he supports Millwall FC, as does Daniel Day Lewis.
  • Breakthrough Hit: Stephen Frears's third film, and its overwhelming critical acclaim launched him onto many more prestigious projects.
  • Fake Nationality: The story focuses on Pakistanis in London. Roshan Seth and Saeed Jeffrey were of Indian descent, and Gordon Warnecke is of Indo-Guyanese and German descent.
  • No Budget: Only made for £600,000.
  • Production Posse: Cinematographer Oliver Stapleton worked with Stephen Frears for the first time here, and would later become his regular collaborator.
  • Star-Making Role: This, coupled with A Room with a View, put Daniel Day Lewis on the map.
  • Wag the Director: Shirley Anne Field ordered her character to be rewritten, refusing to wear red underwear unless Rachel was "properly written".
  • What Could Have Been: Gary Oldman turned down the role of Johnny, having issues with the script and dialogue. The other choices were Tim Roth, who Stephen Frears had just worked with, and Kenneth Branagh, who was "desperate for the part but really wasn't right for it."
