Trivia / Mother of Tears

• The Other Darrin: Mater Lachrymarum cameo'd in Inferno (1980) played by Ania Pieroni. Here in a full role she is played by Moran Atias.
• Sequel Gap: Inferno came out in 1980, and Mother of Tears in 2007.
• Real-Life Relative: Dario Argento cast his daughter Asia as the lead. Asia's mother Daria Nicolodi also plays her onscreen mother.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Daria Nicolodi has said that she wrote a script for the third film as early as 1984, but ultimately none of her ideas were used in Mother Of Tears.
  • Sienna Miller was rumored as the lead actress for months, before Asia Argento was cast.
  • Ania Pieroni - who had cameo'd as the titular mother in Inferno - was offered to reprise her role for this. Feeling she was too old and having been retired since 1985, she declined.
• Working Title: The Third Mother for years (a literal translation of the actual Italian title, La terza madre).
• You Look Familiar: Udo Kier had appeared in Suspiria as Frank Mandel (though his voice was dubbed). Here he plays a character called Padre Johannes, using his real voice.
  • Daria Nicolodi provided Helena Markos' voice in Suspiria, and Elise De Longvalle Adler in Inferno (1980). Here, she plays Elisa, the witch who ironically reduced Markos to her state in the former film.
