- Technology Marches On: The book was published in 1996 and the technology dates it to that period. Lots of characters use car phones when they're out and about, and hardly anyone owns or uses a cellphone; Neil's storyline in particular would likely have been resolved more quickly if cellphones were a thing, as he could just send Maggie a text if he wanted to contact her, rather than having to travel around trying to find someone who knows Maggie's landline number in Newport. Maggie also has to drop her camera off at a drugstore and wait a few days to get the pictures she took of the cemetery developed; nowadays she could've just taken the pictures with her phone and had instant access to the photos.

- Maggie Holloway and Nuala Moore were both widowed young; Mary Higgins Clark herself was widowed in her thirties.
- After being widowed, Nuala married again but her second marriage ended in divorce, before she found happiness with her third husband. Higgins Clark herself described her second marriage as a "disaster" and it ended in an annulment. She married her third husband the same year Moonlight Becomes You was published, which by all accounts was much happier (she and her third husband were together until his death in 2018).
- In a much less tragic example, Higgins Clark was an American of Irish descent, just like Nuala and Maggie.
