Creator's Pest: In the commentary track for the original OVAs, director Mamoru Oshii spends most of the second episodes' track talking about his issues with Kanuka Clancy's character: she is too perfect to write stories about and does not fit with his vision of anime, but she was to be included due to the insistence of other creators in the team and, later, popularity with fans. He even ends it with a statement to the effect "It pains me to even look at her". Despite this, he still gave Kanuka major roles in some of the episodes he wrote for the TV series.note This, along with the statements in Mini-Pato and Next Generation that Kanuka was included as if to balance the gender ratio, gives lots of insight to Kanuka's Sixth Ranger status. Basically, the creators tried to give her flaws and use her to portray the Japanese's attitude toward foreigners, but the result was never satisfying. Her replacement by Kumagami Takeo is likely an attempt to fix these issues: reintroduce The Ace, but this time make her a Japanese and more vulnerable. However, there is still not much Character Development and team integration for Kumagami. It should be noted that while the flaws of other officers, most notably Ota, drive the story, Kumagami's flawtakes her out of the story instead.
