• Banned in China:
  • The film was banned in Chile under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet for exposing the atrocities committed by the Chilean military during and after the 1973 coup. The ban was lifted 20 years after the film's original release, only after Pinochet was arrested in London and had lost his iron grip on power.
  • Both it and the book it was based on went missing in the United States for a couple of decades owing to a libel suit over the way the State Department was portrayed.
• California Doubling: Mexico stands in for Chile, due to Pinochet still being in power at the time of filming.
