  • Creator Backlash: "Guilty of Being White." Ian wrote it about being bullied by other students in a predominately black high school, but it's been called racist by some, as well as been adopted as an anthem by white-power groups.
  • Genre Popularizer: Hardcore Punk and Straight Edge.
  • Short-Lived, Big Impact: The band only lasted about 3 years total. In that time, they became one of the most important Hardcore Punk bands of all time and kickstarted the Straight Edge subculture to boot.
  • Throw It In!: The spoken word section in the re-recording of "Out Of Step" (as heard on the album of the same name). The band had intended to add a scripted spoken section clarifying that the lyrics were meant as a personal statement about drugs and alcohol, and that the audience themselves should decide for themselves whether it applied to them, but Ian McKaye and Jeff Nelson argued in studio over what the exact statement should be. Producer Don Zientara surreptitiously recorded the argument and used excerpts of Ian's half as Spoken Word in Music.
