- Sleeper Hit: When the film was first released it was labeled a flop and was received negatively by distributors and theatre owners who rarely showed it. After a New York theatre owner started playing the film because he had nothing else to show, it caught on with audiences. When it became widely available the following year, it became a bonafide smash hit and eventually sold over 40 million tickets after several rereleases, making it handily the most-attended film of the silent era. Its ticket sales wouldn't be eclipsed until Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937.
