• Production Posse: This is the third of five movies John Sayles has directed Chris Cooper in. Other actors in this movie who have appeared in past (or future) Sayles projects include Joe Morton (The Brother from Another Planet, City Of Hope), Elizabeth Peña (Sayles' short-lived TV show Shannon's Deal), Kris Kristofferson (Limbo, Silver City), Vanessa Martinez (who plays the young Pilar, and who would go on to appear in Limbo and Casa de los Babys), and Leo Burmester (Passion Fish, Limbo). In addition, Tay Strathairn, son of frequent Sayles collaborator David Strathairn, plays the young Sam.
• Underage Casting: Though Otis is Delmore's father, Ron Canada, who plays Otis, is in fact 18 months younger than Joe Morton, who plays Delmore.
