• Backed by the Pentagon: Despite Dooley's not-especially-legal Cowboy Cop antics, the production was backed by the San Diego Police Department, with the real SDPD K-9 unit acting as technical advisors and dog trainers.
• Dueling Movies: Against Turner and Hooch, both being about cops partnered with dogs.
• Life Imitates Art: Towards the end of the movie, Jerry Lee is shot while apprehending a suspect in the attempted murder of a police officer. Two years after the film's release, Koton (who had returned to real police work after the movie) was shot and killed while apprehending a suspect in the attempted murder of a police officer.
