Trivia / Jupiter's Legacy

Go To

Comic Series

  • Money, Dear Boy: While Mark Millar regularly regards Jupiter's Legacy as his own personal Star Wars-like saga, he was more than happy to admit that the project kicked off so he could give artist Frank Quitely some work.

Live-Action Series

  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • Anna Akana, like her character Raikou, is mixed race with Caucasian and East Asian parents.
    • Humberly González (Gabriella) and Jess Salgueiro (Jacinda) portray characters who appear to be Latina, or at least of Iberian descent (Salgueiro's Portuguese Canadian) like them, to judge by their names.
  • Creative Differences: On September 16, 2019, it was confirmed that Steve S. DeKnight departed the series as showrunner over "creative differences" in the midst of production for the first season.
  • Fake American: Brit Ben Daniels plus a string of Canadian actors play American characters, due to the series being shot in Toronto, Canada.
  • Follow the Leader: The show was Netflix's response to the adult-oriented Superhero media boom that started with Deadpool (2016) and exploded in popularity with Amazon Prime's The Boys (2019) with the show being a dark and gory look to superheroes and superheroics in a modern, selfish and cynical world.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Humberly González plays Gabriella, who was dating Jacinda in the series. González is queer, coming out after this aired.
  • Stillborn Franchise: Kind of; Jupiter's Legacy was meant to be Netflix's premier superhero show with many other tie-in productions in mind such as an animated feature and possible spin-offs. However, due to the Troubled Production, bad reviews and the show going overbudget, it was cancelled by Netflix's new management... but in order to save face, they immediately announced that their coming adaptations of Mark Miller's works would be set in the same universe.
  • Troubled Production: Production wasn't entirely smooth.
    • Netflix greatly underestimated the amount of money needed for a superhero TV show, initially budgeting $9 million per episodenote , but production quickly went overbudget and behind schedule.
    • Showrunner Steven DeKnight left halfway through filming due to Creative Differences, putting production behind schedule even further due to the temporary shutdown. Sang Kyu Kim was brought in to take over as showrunner and reworked the episodes already shot to fit his own vision for the show, adding to the costs and delays.
    • Post-production dragged on through 2020. Louis Letterier, who had a good track record at Netflix with Dark Crystal and Lupin, was brought in at the last minute as a creative consultant, but he couldn't do much to help as everything was so far along.
    • In post-production a new Netflix head of TV was put in charge who was not impressed with the show, as it was an expensive flop they were not responsible for.
    • In the wake of the cancellation, Netflix tried to spin the bad press and poor reviews by claiming they wanted to continue working with IPs related to Millarworld by announcing production on Supercrooks and The Magic Order and trying to weld them to the Jupiter brand despite the originals not sharing a universe.
