• Science Marches On: Part of the novel's backstory has the US Air Force join up with conservative religious and social elements after fuel becomes unavailable. Recently, the Air Force has begun investing heavily in biofuel research so as not to be caught in such a position (although more likely they're worried about oil imports being cut off due to war or other disruptions of trade, as opposed to fossil fuels running out altogether).
• Throw It In!: An in-universe example in Julian's biopic of Charles Darwin including the last surviving giraffe in the Central Park Zoo (which wandered into the shot out of curiosity).
