• Awesome, Dear Boy: The majority of actors who tried out for this movie did so after developing a love for the book, even though Barry Jenkins didn't explicitly require actors to read it before auditioning.
• Promoted Fanboy: An interview with Jenkins referred to Ed Skrein, Pedro Pascal, and Diego Luna as the biggest James Baldwin fans in the cast. Pascal also publicly endorsed Jenkins' previous movie, Moonlight (2016), before the director cast him as Pietro.
• Serendipity Writes the Plot: The night of filming Tish's and Fonny's walk home from the restaurant brought forth some unexpected rain. Barry Jenkins decided that the shower would make the scene look even more romantic, so KiKi Layne and Stephan James agreed to shoot it in the rain, after borrowing a red umbrella from Diego Luna.
