  • Creative Differences: Haskell Wexler was the original cinematographer, but was fired by Woody Allen after a week of filming as they couldn't agree on how to film certain shots. Wedigo von Schultzendorff replaced Wexler.
  • Direct to Video: In the United Kingdom, it was the first of Allen's films not to receive a theatrical release.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: Woody Allen expressed confusion at the underwhelming response this film got, since despite his usually withering opinion of his work, he sees it as one of the funniest films he's done.
  • Write What You Know: The relationship between the Chinese cinematographer, his translator, and Waxman is loosely based on the relationship between Allen and cinematographer Zhao Fei, who worked together on Sweet and Lowdown, Small Time Crooks, and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion. Allen exaggerated the comic aspect of the relationship.
