- Died During Production: He left a big amount of sketches for, but did not complete orchestrating, what would have been Symphony No. 10. The sketch is detailed enough that various music scholars have taken up the task of completing it; it has been performed fairly often in several different arrangements. The most widely performed version is by British musicologist Deryck Cooke, which received the blessing of Mahler's widow Alma.
- Doing It for the Art: His professional job was conducting, not composing, but he composed anyway in his spare time simply because he wanted to write his own music (and challenge himself on what he had learned from conducting). Having to compromise between conducting and composing is one reason why his œuvre is relatively limited.
- Reclusive Artist: Although he was personable enough (a conductor has to be able to get along with and manage large numbers of people, after all), he preferred composing when in near-total social isolation in a small cabin, spending the entire day there. Three 'composing huts' he had built near his homes still exist, preserved as little museums to him.
