* ActorAllusion / ActorSharedBackground: Alexander Dane's [[IAmNotSpock resentment]] of being {{Typecast}} following his famous television role reflects on his actor Rickman similarly trying to avoid typecasting as a villain following his BreakoutRole as Hans Gruber in ''Film/DieHard''. Also, both Dane and Rickman came from Shakespearian acting backgrounds.
* BasedOnATrueStory: A Franchise/StarTrek fanfic with a similar plot, Jean Lorrah and Willard F. Hunt's "[[http://members.optusnet.com.au/virgothomas/space/trek/weirdplanet.html Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited]]", was originally published in [[http://fanlore.org/wiki/Spockanalia the zine ''Spockanalia']]' ([[http://www.startrek.com/article/spockanalia-the-first-star-trek-fanzine more here]]) in 1967, and was reprinted in the 1970s in ''[[http://fanlore.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_New_Voyages Star Trek: The New Voyages]]'', an anthology of fanfics edited by Sondra Marshak, Jacqueline Lichtenberg, and Myrna Culbreath. In the story, Creator/WilliamShatner, Creator/LeonardNimoy, and Creator/DeForestKelley are accidentally beamed to the '''actual''' ''U.S.S. Enterprise'' in a crisis with the Klingons. [[note]]This was a sequel to [[http://fanlore.org/wiki/Visit_to_a_Weird_Planet Ruth Berman's original story, "Visit to a Weird Planet"]], which had Kirk, Spock and [=McCoy=] beamed to the ''Star Trek'' set.[[/note]]
* DeletedScene: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b4s5CfPD4Y Several]], including Fred taking pot, Gwen using DistractedByTheSexy to take out some {{mooks}} and a PlaceboEurekaMoment by an unknown Thermian.
* FakeNationality: Parodied with Arab-American Tony Shalhoub playing Chinese-named Fred Kwan/Sgt. Chen, a reference to Japanese-American George Takei playing totally not Japanese-named Sulu on ''Series/{{Star Trek|The Original Series}}'', Englishman Patrick Stewart playing French Jean-Luc Picard on ''[[Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration TNG]]'', and Canadian James Doohan playing Scotty, [[CaptainObvious a Scotsman]].
** Kwan isn't even his real name. He visibly squints for the camera in an attempt to make his eyes look Asian.
* HeyItsThatGuy: Justin Long, the Mac Guy (from the "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" commercials) in his first film role as one of the ''Galaxy Quest'' fanboys.
** Also [[TheOffice Dwight Schrute]] (Rainn Wilson) as one of the aliens! And [[Series/{{Scrubs}} Ted Buckland]] (Sam Lloyd) as another!
*** And [[Series/StarTrekEnterprise Crewman Daniels]] as a third!
** And [[Series/{{Monk}} Adrian Monk]]!
*** He even mentioned how clean the floor of the space ship was.
*** Though the trope applied at the time, audiences would have recognized him as the FunnyForeigner from Wings.
** Alexander is [[Film/DieHard Hans Gruber!]].
*** And the [[Film/RobinHoodPrinceOfThieves Sheriff of Nottingham]], and [[{{Dogma}} the Metatron]], and [[Film/HarryPotter Severus Snape]]...
**** (You are reading this in Mr. Rickman's bored voice)
** [[Series/VeronicaMars Daddy Mars]] is Mathazar, the head alien!
*** He's also [[Series/StargateSG1 That archaeologist who got captured with Daniel Jackson in Honduras]]!
*** ... and [[{{Series/Flashpoint}} Sgt. Gregory Parker]]!
** Look! [[http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0567852/ One of the Kids in the Hall]]!
** [[Franchise/{{Alien}} Ellen Ripley]] certainly got a cushier job.
** [[Series/HomeImprovement Tim "The Tool-Man" Taylor]], [[Film/TheSantaClause Scott Calvin]] and [[WesternAnimation/ToyStory Buzz Lightyear]] show up too.
** And Sarris himself is [[Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer Giles']] least favorite chaos warlock, Ethan Rayne.
*** Well, it's no wonder that Sarris nearly won, the heroes were going up against [[VideoGame/MassEffect2 the baddest bounty hunter in the Terminus Systems, Zaeed Massani!]]
** Listen closely, [[Franchise/MassEffect Garrus Vakarian]] is in this film!
*** He's also in the deleted scene where they're performing ''[[MemeticMutation calibrations]]'' on the Beryllium Sphere.
** Series/MythBusters: Adam, [[http://www.modelermagic.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/kg_nsea_protector_studio_model-019.jpg Grant]], and Tory all did model work for the film.
** [[Film/IronMan2 Justin Hammer]] and [[Film/TheHitchhikersGuideToTheGalaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox]] is the GenreSavvy RedShirt Guy.
* HeyItsThatVoice: The Japanese dub can be considered as HilariousInHindsight by itself, since most of the voice cast are from the ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'' saga, especially from the original ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'' series, being the Japanese equivalent of ''Franchise/StarTrek''.
** [[Creator/HirotakaSuzuoki Jason Nesmith/Captain Peter Quincy McTaggart was]] ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundam Captain Bright Noah]]''.
** [[Creator/MamiKoyama Gwen DeMarco/Lt. Tawny Madison is]] [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam Kycillia Zabi]] and [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny Talia Gladys]].
** [[Creator/UnshoIshizuka Alexander Dane/Dr. Lazarus of Tev'Meck is]] [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam00 Sergei Smirnov]]
** [[Creator/DaisukeSakaguchi Brandon is]] [[Anime/MobileSuitVictoryGundam Usso Ewing]]!
** One of the aliens is [[WesternAnimation/TheMagicAdventuresOfMumfie every Magic Adventures of Mumfie character ever]] except for the two queens!
* NamesTheSame: A very different Jason Nesmith is a singer-songwriter, and son of TheMonkees' Creator/MichaelNesmith.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Prior to release, this movie was met with disdain by Trek Alumns, who assumed that this was going to be a mean-spirited parody of the show that made them famous and the fans of that show who love them. This perception quickly changed as it became apparent on release that this was instead an AffectionateParody. Some expressed regret that they did not participate on the film in retrospect. Particularly WilWheaton who suggested he could have had a cameo where he insults Tommy Webber for his TeenGenius KidAppealCharacter.
** Following tropes ended up in the DeletedScenes:
*** NobodyPoops: [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] in one scene, where one of the Thermians mentions to Alexander that Earth's "historical documents" did not contain any information regarding waste facilities on the ship and "we extrapolated based on your anatomy" -- revealing what looked to be the most horrendously painful toilet ever created.
*** PlaceboEurekaMoment: In a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b4s5CfPD4Y deleted scene]], a Thermian crew member has one of these while being tested by Tech Sergeant Chen.
*** ThePowerOfActing: When Jason is fighting the rock monster, Alexander's advice is to attempt to figure out its "motivation". One deleted scene shows Alex "entering the mind" of the rock monster through method acting, deducing that what it ''really'' wants is peace and quiet. [[spoiler: And, as the climax of the film reveals, he was right.]]
*** {{Stripperiffic}}: In the film we see Gwen's uniform undergo ClothingDamage. In a [[http://youtu.be/9b4s5CfPD4Y?t=2m58s Deleted Scene]], she uses it to her [[InterspeciesRomance advantage]].
** Creator/HaroldRamis was attached to the film as director at one point, and wanted Creator/KevinKline or Creator/AlecBaldwin as Jason Nesmith. He left after Creator/TimAllen got cast.
