Trivia / Far from Heaven

  • Actor-Inspired Element: Julianne Moore was the one who suggested that her character had to be blonde. Todd Haynes disagreed at first, but later told her she was right. So he had to do some changes in the film, like the color of the scarf, in order to fit that.
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: Dennis Quaid agreed to being in the film without even reading the screenplay as he was so keen to work with Todd Haynes.
  • Hide Your Pregnancy: Julianne Moore was pregnant during filming. Costume designer Sandy Powell commissioned a duplicate of Cathy's party dress, with the pattern modified to fit her, after shooting of the party scene was pushed back to later in the schedule. However, due to budget constraints, duplicating the dress was not an option. The dress was carefully shaded by a member of the wardrobe department to disguise Moore's pregnancy.
  • Reality Subtext: Dennis Quaid found the secretive husband easy to relate to as Quaid himself had covered up the fact that he had been a cocaine addict for many years.
  • What Could Have Been: Todd Haynes wrote the script envisioning James Gandolfini as Frank, but he was unavailable due to The Sopranos. Haynes' next choice, Russell Crowe, believed that the role was too small, and Jeff Bridges wanted too much money.
  • Working Title: This Splendid Life, Circles in the Sun, The Surface of Things and Fall From Splendor.
