- What Could Have Been: In the first version of the script (co-written by Federico Fellini) Irene was divorced from her husband and André was explicitly her lover (in the released film George only accuses her of having an affair with him), and the ending had her released from the mental institution and continuing her humanitarian work in accordance with Christian dogma. This version also had her son surviving and being re-united with her at the end of the film.
