Trivia / Dr. Ken

Go To

  • Dawson Casting: Krista Marie Yu, who plays the 16-year-old Molly, is a college graduate in her 20s.
  • Fake Nationality: Intentionally averted by Ken and Allison, who are Korean and Japanese, respectively, matching the nationalities of the actors playing them. However their children, who are supposed to be half-Korean, half-Japanese, are played by Chinese/Taiwanese actors.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Several of Ken's Community co-stars make an appearance, as does the creator of that show, Dan Harmon.
  • Playing Against Type: Ken Jeong plays a character who, for once, isn't a completely deranged and sociopathic Jerkass like his usual roles, though he's still kind of a jerk.
  • Real-Life Relative: One of Ken Jeong's twin daughters Zooey guest-starred as Dave's classmate and "girlfriend" Emily
  • Reality Subtext: The episode "Allison Finds A Lump" is drawn heavily from Ken Jeong's real life, as his wife was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer that she successfully is in remission from. Suzy Nakamura herself also had a cancer scare and lost her mother to cancer.
  • Write What You Know: Ken Jeong really is a licensed medical physician. He did comedy and acting on the side as a way to relax when he was in practice. As his acting career took off, he retired from active practice but keeps his license active. In interviews, he said that the show's storylines are very loosely based on his own experiences as a doctor. He also says that his wife, who's also a doctor, and their doctor friends help him loosely fact check some of the things on the show.
