• What Could Have Been: As Death Metal was being planned, so was Generations, a semi-sequel to Doomsday Clock and Flash Forward that would have turned Wally West into The Watcher of the new timeline, chronicling the changes caused by Doomsday Clock restoring the JSA, and lay out a road map for DC's timeline. Dan DiDio was spear-heading this event, when he abruptly left DC Comics under still-unknown circumstances (though it is popularly speculated he was fired), followed shortly by a massive purge of DC's editorial staff. After the former, Generations was quietly cancelled and Death Metal was re-written to instead serve as a Grand Finale of sorts for DiDio's reign and revamp the DCU under it's new editorial, and as a result completely rewrote the plans for Wally West's character going forward.
