- Ability O Ver Appearance: Most of the actors bear little resemblance to the characters they portray. Most notably, Thomas Henry Huxley not only looked nothing like Toby Jones, but was certainly a good deal taller.
- No Stunt Double: Jennifer Connelly is not a pianist, but that's actually her playing an extraordinarily difficult piece (Chopin's Etude Opus 25 No. 11, "Winder Wind") during the water tower scene.
- Real-Life Relative: Charles Darwin's wife Emma is played by Paul Bettany's actual wife Jennifer Connolly.
- Throw It In!: Jenny the orangutan was originally meant to be trained to perform certain actions in her scene with Charles, but the director decided simply to put Paul Bettany and her in the enclosure together, start the cameras, and let the scene play out. No one predicted the enchanting performance she ended up giving.
