• Follow the Leader: The director projected to make this film for a while, but it's the success of HBO's Chernobyl that permitted its greenlighting.
• Saved from Development Hell: Producer Alexander Rodnyansky, who had filmed the immediate aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, carried a "career-long ambition" to make a film on the events he witnessed. The global success of the HBO mini-series (and the cold reception it got from Russian authorities) was decisive in greenlighting the film.
• Working Title: The script was originally titled Chernobyl 1986.
