- Ability over Appearance: In his memoir, Backing Into Forward, Jules Feiffer said Mike Nichols told him he was considering Jack Nicholson for the role of Jonathan. Feiffer went to see Easy Rider and thought the guy with the "hip Henry Fonda stance and twangy New Jersey drawl" had nothing in common with "the young Jewish misogynist" at the center of his script. Nichols told him: "Trust me, he's going to be our most important actor since Brando."
- California Doubling: Some of the New York-set scenes were done in New York, but the majority of the film was shot in Vancouver, making it one of the first Hollywood productions to film there.
- The Danza: Cynthia O'Neal as Cindy, which is a common nickname for Cynthia.
- Mid-Development Genre Shift: Originally written by Jules Feiffer as a play, but Mike Nichols felt it would work better as a film.
- What Could Have Been: Ann-Margret beat out a bunch of other notable actresses to get cast as Bobbie, including Karen Black, Ellen Burstyn, Joan Collins, Jane Fonda, Natalie Wood and Raquel Welch.
