• Acting in the Dark: Danny Strong read the script with Tom Lenk on their way home from a convention and reportedly skipped the part where Jonathan's death was described and Tom had to break the news to him.
• Completely Different Title:
  • Czech: "Rozhovory se záhrobím" (Conversations with the Beyond)
  • Finnish: "Pahan pauloissa" (Evil Enchanting)
  • French: "Connivences" (Connivances)
  • Polish: "Głosy zza grobu" (Voices from Beyond the Grave)
• Creator's Favorite Episode: Joss Whedon named this as one his ten favourite episodes.
• Deleted Scene: When Buffy confides with Holden "I have all this power. I didn't ask for it. I don't deserve it. It's like… I wanted to be punished," the original script had her telling instead:
  Buffy: I just wanted to be touched. To be reached. Were you here when everything turned into a musical?
  Holden: I missed it.
  Buffy: I explained it a lot better then. With rhyme, and all, but I just... I can't go back to that.
  Holden: And you think you might? You're still attracted to this guy?
  Buffy: Well, he's changed, a lot, a LOT a lot, but no, I... I just can't feel as low as I did then and do what I have to do. Things are getting worse. More of you guys are rising, and... something's coming.
• Prop Recycling: The monster that appears strangling Joyce's corpse is the Gnarl from "Same Time, Same Place" spray-painted black.
• Recycled Set: The library set in which we see Willow and Cassie was the old school library set from seasons one to three.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Amber Benson was initially going to appear as Tara but, according to the writers in this episode's DVD commentaries, she wasn't available. Here's how it was originally scripted. Instead, "Cassie" tells Willow that she isn't allowed to see Tara unless she kills herself.
  • The First was supposed to appear to Xander as Jesse from the first two episodes, but Eric Balfour wasn't available. As a result, this is the only episode that Xander doesn't appear in.
  • The First was supposed to appear to Anya as Halfrek, but Kali Rocha was committed to Noises Off on Broadway and in fact had only one day to film all her Season 7 scenes before she flew out.
  • Dawn's portion of the episode was originally scripted to have her trying to raise Joyce, and this exchange would have happened.
  Dawn: They said I couldn't bring anyone back.
  Joyce: Maybe I'm the first.
• Word of God: According to Jane Espenson, the image of Joyce that tells Dawn "Buffy won't choose you" is indeed the First.
