* CelebrityVoiceActor: Averted at first. Originally the game’s cast was mostly comprised of actors based in Gearbox’s native Dallas area and the voices would mostly be recognizable to those watching anime dubbed by Creator/Funimation. However, Tales began to buck this trend, bringing in West Coast performers, allowing bigger names like Creator/ChrisHardwick and Creator/PatrickWarburton to voice characters. 3 would add the likes of Creator/IceT and Wonderlands would bring in Creator/WillArnett, Creator/WandaSykes, and Creator/AndySamberg.

* AuthorExistenceFailure: [=GameSpy=], which provided the online multiplayer for the PC version, ceased operations in 2013. You can still play LAN multiplayer, though, and the Steam version has since been updated so that it uses Steamworks for multiplayer.
* ColbertBump: Gave a little one to Cage the Elephant, the indie band who recorded the game's theme song.
* DescendedCreator: Crazy Earl the memorably mad merchant is voiced by Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox.
* FanNickname: The Secret Armory DLC is often called the "farmory" (affectionately and not), thanks to a glitch that allowed you to easily loot the many chests at the end with no time limit (whereas normal circumstances give you ~3 minutes to grab stuff).
* SleeperHit: While not without excitement leading to its release, an original franchise from a relatively unknown studio becoming universally acclaimed was unexpected, to say the least.
* UrbanLegendOfZelda: Played with and averted. It may sound foolish to go on the hidden boat in Treacher's Landing and shoot a few barrels, but then something actually happens. [[spoiler:It's Tannis suddenly riding around the area on a fish, with unique music to boot.]]
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Early trailers suggested a story-based, RealIsBrown FPS with RPG elements and ProceduralGeneration. It was changed to a colorful, RuleOfFun FPS/RPG with focus on MoreDakka. There was an entire story that was mostly cut out and the art-style underwent a total overhaul unusually late in development. All the original concept art went unused, which actually led to one of the devs (the art director) leaving the game industry forever. Helena Pierce also played a prominent role in the trailer, indicating that she was originally supposed to have a much larger role in the original storyline for the game itself, rather than being just one of many sidequest givers with almost no input into the main plot.
** The fans and critics alike were disappointed by a lack of storytelling and the FinalBoss being a GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere, which most likely caused the developers to put a bit more emphasis on story in the sequel, though it still retains the run, shoot, and loot gameplay from the first game.
** In the Game Informer article, they mentioned being able to disassemble guns into their parts so you could build your own super guns out of them. Not that it matters when you can find almost any combination you could want in game anyway (or build your own from component parts outside of the game with a gear construction kit).

Hey Its That Guy cut by TRS decision. Ditto for Hey Its That Voice.

* HeyItsThatVoice: Almost everybody except for the Claptraps is voiced by the regulars of Creator/FUNimation.
** Moxxi is voiced by Yue Ayase and Holo.
** Lilith and Tannis are both voiced by Creator/ColleenClinkenbeard.
** Creator/ChristopherSabat gets in a few lines as Sledge.
** Brick is Superfly.
** Steele is Nancy Drew
** Some of the Japanese cast are some well known names in anime:
*** Roland is Makoto Itou and The Edel Bernal
*** Lilith is Tsubaki Yayoi and Chihaya Kisaragi
*** Claptrap is Garrod Ran and Onizuka Eikichi. (Also overlaps with CastingGag and HilariousInHindsight in Garrod's case, since he went from being someone who pilots a robot in an apocalyptic setting to being a robot in a vaguely apocalyptic setting.)
