Trivia / Blasto

  • In Memoriam: The game is in memory of David Poe (the game's producer) who unexpectedly passed away at the start of the game's production.
  • Stillborn Franchise: A potential franchise including sequels, toys, and cartoons, was cut short due to Phil Hartman being murdered a month after the game's release. Since Hartman was a major factor for the game, and the developer didn't feel right making more games without him, all plans were abandoned.
  • Troubled Production: The team had very little experience in 3D game design and had to figure out how to make the game's levels, obstacles, and enemies work properly in a 3d space without the player just bypassing them all. Also, the game's polygonal environments had to be reduced to not use up the game's memory, The game was also rushed out due to a premature marketing campaign leading to a disastrous late launch with a lot of cut content and reduced mechanics such as the jetpack.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Although Blasto's attacks would be mostly weapon-oriented, an early concept was if Blasto was close enough to a slimy green alien, he would thrust his blaster hand down the alien's throat and blow it up. In the final version of the game, this animation was replaced with Blasto hitting the alien with his blaster.
    • The game was going to have a "profanity card" which would be activated by buying a special memory card to unlock profanity in the game but the idea was scrapped when the developers realized that it wouldn't make sense.
    • The game originally had a swamp level and an unknown transparent level but they were cut out.
    • A idea the developers toyed around with was a sequel called "Son of Blasto" with Chris Rock in the lead role but nothing came of it.
  • Working Title: The game was originally titled Captain Blasto but Sony decided against putting “Captain” in the name to avoid confusion with “Captain Quazar”, another blonde-haired, big-chested videogame hero. This became the name for the game in the Japanese release.
