Trivia / Beautiful Girls

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Natalie Portman was uncomfortable with the reception to her character in this film - specifically, what she thought of how the character was sexualized even though she was so young - and turned down a film adaptation of Lolita because of it.
  • Dawson Casting: True of just about everyone in the cast - except for Anne Bobby, Max Perlich, and Mira Sorvino, who were all around their characters' ages - but especially egregious with Timothy Hutton, who was 36 years old and playing a 28-year-old. Justified in the case of Natalie Portman, a 15-year-old playing a 13-year-old.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Director Ted Demme had all the characters hang out in Minneapolis, where the movie was filmed, for 2-3 weeks before filming began, so the characters would be convincing as friends.
  • Throw It In!: Willie kissing Marty on the cheek at the end was unscripted, and Natalie Portman's reaction is genuine.
  • What Could Have Been: Tony Scott was offered the script, but declined, feeling he couldn't do justice to the movie. James L. Brooks was also considered.
  • Write What You Know: Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg was inspired to write the movie when he came back to his hometown of Needham, Massachusetts - while waiting to see if his script for Con Air was going to be produced - and seeing how his friends, all approaching the age of 30, were refusing to grow up and/or had commitment issues, which inspired the characters in this film.
