Trivia / Batman '89

Go To

  • Extremely Lengthy Creation: Artist Joe Quinones stated in 2016 that he initially pitched Batman '89 alongside writer Kate Leth back in 2015. He even did a bunch of artwork for it and really pushed for it...only for the pitch to be rejected. Then, in 2019, Jim Lee stated that many writers had proposed a comic set in the "Burtonverse" over the years and one of them might be getting made. Finally, in February 2021, Batman '89 was announced with Quinones as artist and Sam Hamm (the original writer of Batman (1989)) on board to write it.
  • Follow the Leader: Another DC Comics continuation of an older DC media property that started with Batman '66.
  • Recursive Adaptation: A comic book based on a movie based on a comic book.
  • Sequel in Another Medium: Batman '89 is the official sequel to the first and second Batman films directed by Tim Burton.
  • What Could Have Been: The comic will be exploring concepts that might have made it on-screen had Burton stayed with the franchise, like showing Billy Dee Williams' Harvey Dent transform into Two-Face and Marlon Wayans as Robin.
    • Kate Leth was originally set to write the comic book series as originally planned in 2016, but after DC gave the green light in late 2020, Leth dropped out due to other commitments. Thus, she was replaced by Sam Hamm.
    • Versions of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy were included in the original 2016 pitch. Harley was in fact Alicia Hunt, the Joker's girlfriend, who apparently survived her supposed suicide attempt in the original movie. Poison Ivy was visually modeled after actress Geena Davis.
