Yves has been shown to be fairly comfortable with his sexuality, but in the mental hospital, he tells Pierre of being viciously bullied at Catholic School and tearfully expresses anger that his mother did not protect him. Pierre comforts him.
The final sequence shows a frail, elderly Yves in silhouette, still sketching obsessively as Pierre cares for him. It fades to Pierre alone, surrounded by books, looking out the window and missing the love of his life.
