The Void is a place where it is easy to lose hope and give up. These moments could easily break one into falling into despair and losing their way.

  • As you explore the Void, you occasionally will run into birch trees you can rest at. They welcome dreams of past events and many of them are of a simpler time. From Lily's antics with Gray, to Lillie's childhood cheer, all these memories are preludes to tragedies that result in Gray and Lilith turning out the way they did. Gray's desperation to rescue her princess, her one friend, and Lilith trying to escape the Void and eventually deciding she needs to make peace with her resentment of her adoptive mother, it's clear that their past joys haunt their present selves and how it drives them forward.
  • Throughout the Void, you'll encounter boulders with distinct skull faces on them. As Tail reveals, they are actually Void Eggs. And what creates a Void Egg? If someone falls into the Void and gives up trying to find a way out. If you have the Void Memory, you can speak to these Void Eggs; while the eggs that are by themselves on a given floor will offer some lore or helpful advice, if you encounter multiple Void Eggs, the only words you can get out of them are words of despair and begging for escape. If you are voided and you repeatedly fail a room as Gray or Lillie, you too can share this fate if you give up in getting back on your feet.
  • In Lilith Mode, you eventually meet a meek girl named Ninnie. Scared of everything, she is easily intimidated by Lillie's mere presence at first until she sees the wonders of the Void Scepter. Accepting her quest has you embark on a lengthy trial of guiding Ninnie through, the two bonding as they go deeper and deeper. Eventually the two become stuck and have no way to progress. Ninnie and Lilith begin to talk with each other as they try to think of ideas on how to get out of their predicament, taking naps in shifts(read: closing the game and opening it again) while making sure Ninnie's morale doesn't drop. Towards the end of this sequence, Lilith decides to promise to train the timid girl and Ninnie is quite excited to learn how to fight, even if she thinks she won't match her new friend. Close and open the game one more time, and you see that Ninnie has turned into a void egg, having fully succumb to despair and giving up. Examining her, she simply bids farewell to Lilith, leaving her all alone once again.
  • Lilith's dreams are about her growing up under Gray's care. They're cute scenes with her being just as cheery and spunky as her biological mom, something Gray takes quite a delight in. But as Lilith grows up, she becomes less dependent on Gray and begins to see that Gray is becoming more insistent on how she wants things done. Towards the end once she becomes a late teenager, she gets her hair cut and takes on a more punk-ish fashion with the fur coat. Something Gray is *not* pleased with. The two get into a heated argument with Lilith mentioning that she doesn't have anyone else in her life because of her stick-in-the-mud attitude and her lack of a sex life, which causes Gray to smack her across the face and say Lilith is "just like her mother". Lilith then realizes in shock that Gray's not her biological mother, Gray snaps and screams at her kid to leave the house after throwing a pot off the oven in rage, scaring Lilith away. After this, it's not only shown that this is why Lilith feels so distant about Gray in the present but also that Gray is suffering from extreme guilt over not being able to rescue her liege from the Void after being presented with a Sadistic Choice.
  • Deep in the DIS route, Cif is forced to confront Gray who she knows is a mentally dormant Add. She is hesitant and regretful that they meet in such circumstances but she cannot disobey DIS' call to defend it.
"This is the way you want to end it all? ... I can't remember the last time DIS called us this deep. Brings you back. But don't think I'm going to go easy on you out of sentimentality."
  • If you defeat Cif the hard way, you're treated to her thoughts as her body gives out from the strain of wielding DIS's power. She reflects on the place Add had in her life (i.e., something akin to a mother), and can only thank the latter for fond memories before bidding farewell. This is superimposed over an image of a beaming Add holding Cif's true form above her head like an infant.
  • The bad ending song 'Voided'. All of its lyrics are depressing and sing about how no matter how much you lose, how much it hurts, how much you forget... all you can do is hold on and keep moving. Even if you have to shut everything out.
I hold on, I hold on, I hold on.
Cause that's the only thing, the one thing that I can control.
My grievance is mine, my sadness is mine.
    My loss is mine.
