- Edmund's murder. He may only feature in the first part of the book, but Penman creates a fully realized character and both Richard and Edward, in particular, think of him and are haunted by his death.
- Gareth dying of old age is very sorrowful. Edward gifted him to Richard as a puppy and he was a beloved companion. His death marks not only the passage of time, but the beginning of a long series of terrible events for both Anne and Richard.
- The death of Anne & Richard's son, Edward, is absolutely devastating to both of them. He's their only child and Anne never truly recovers.
- After spending the entire book getting to know Anne, her slow, agonizing death from tuberculosis in the last part of the book is heartbreaking.
- Richard's own death at Red Plain (Bosworth) is a major tearjerker as well.
