Tear Jerker / The Little Mermaid (1968)

• The Mermaid's tragic tale of Unrequited Love for the prince in general. She falls in love with the prince and rescues him. However, he falls in love with the princess of a neighbouring kingdom, a woman whom the prince believes rescued him (whereas she just found him on the shore). The prince cannot fully recognize his savior in the mute Mermaid, then invites her to the wedding, believing that she wants to share in his happiness, but she is actually heartbroken over the entire ordeal and even has to carry the bride's train dress and comes with them on their honeymoon boat. It reaches the point where she is pushed to kill the prince by her sisters so she can turn back into a mermaid and avoid death, but she ultimately chooses death instead because she could not bear to see the deed through.
