• The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen, who actually wrote a lot of insanely tear-jerking stories, perhaps because of Creator Breakdown. His personal history was rather tragic, after all.
  • The Little Match Girl was parodied in Hogfather where Death, having temporarily taken on the role of the Hogfather, refused to let her die, and gave her up for adoption instead. The angels who come to bring her into heaven get snowballs thrown at them by Death's Sidekick. And if you are not familiar with Discworld, then please believe me when I say that It Makes Sense in Context, and is a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming in itself. Watch it here.
    • "Parody" does not do it justice. For anyone who has lost a younger sibling, this scene combines heartbreak and joy in nearly lethal quantities.
