Mary's death. Connors and his men break into Kreizler's house while he and Moore are away, and she attacks him with a knife when he starts beating up Stevie. Connors knocks her down the stairs, breaking her neck.
Joseph's death. The worst part is that he's killed for no other reason than to cause Moore pain; Beecham knows he's a contact of Moore's and is trying to hurt him.
Throughout the book, there's a low-key running joke about how Stevie is a chainsmoker, and how he has to hide it from Kreizler because the doctor doesn't want him smoking. Moore reveals in the epilogue that Stevie has even opened a tobacco shop. It becomes worse when you read the prologue of Angel of Darkness and it's revealed that Stevie has developed a bad, bloodycough, which is implied to be lung cancer. Steve suspects that he may have anywhere from a few years to a few months to live; and it's made worse by the fact that by 1919 Stevie is only about thirty-five years-old.
