Tear Jerker / Six of Crows

Go To

  • Wylan smugly winning a bet against Kaz that involved proving how his father would be willing to let him die if it meant personal gain; even though he's his son. Kaz thought he would win because he simply assumed any parent loves their child more than achieving a personal gain, but Wylan's father doesn't. Kaz is disgusted at losing in such a way.
  • Inej's terrified reaction when Van Eck casually orders his guards to break her legs in a way that they never heal again. At first, she tries to hold herself together, but then she starts panicking, then she starts begging and ends with this:
Inej: [Kaz will] never trade if you break me! I'll be of no use to him anymore!
  • In Crooked Kingdom, the entire subplot about the fate of Marya Van Eck, Wylan's mother. Jan Van Eck has Marya secretly committed to an asylum so he can divorce her and take her assets, then he simply claimed that she was dead. Wylan learns the truth and visits his mother (who doesn't recognize him because he has Kuwei Yul Bo's appearance), all of which causes an Heroic BSoD. At least he finally manages to free her at the end of the story and start a new life with her. But it doesn't change how this moment just hurts.
    • Wylan sobbing in the middle of the road after finding out what actually happened to his mom is hard to read without wanting to cry.
  • In Crooked Kingdom, Jesper finally confronting his dad with what he had done with his uni loan, and how he earns a living now.
  • Also in Crooked Kingdom, and also a Heartwarming Moment, Inej's final chapter where, for the first time since she was enslaved, she's allowed safety and a full stomach for no other reason than she has friends who love her. Afterward, Kaz offers her the ship she dreamed of having to hunt slavers. The final crest of the series is him reuniting Inej with her parents, whom he had located and brought over. Inej, who's been such a sober disciplined character for much of the duology, almost faints in shock and begins crying. Kaz holds her up and genuinely asks if he upset her, to which she clarifies she's crying Tears of Joy. When she asks him to meet her parents with her, he gives a smile and follows her. He even takes a moment to enjoy Inej's laugh of happiness as she runs off to reunite with her parents, who instantly start crying upon seeing their long-missing daughter again.
  • Possibly the worst tearjerker example in Crooked Kingdom. Near the end, a Diabolus ex Machina has Matthias shot by an angry young Drüskelle who regards him as a traitor for turning on his former beliefs. He survives long enough to find Nina and proclaim his love for her one last time, to which a heartbroken Nina says he must live to make it "home". Matthias, who takes her hands and holds them to his heart, replies he is home and dies in her arms. A distraught and broken Nina reacts with a Skyward Scream before nearly deciding to try bringing him back, but decides against it when realizing he'll just come back wrong. The entire Crow group is devastated at the loss and see that he receives a proper burial according to his customs.
    • Following his death, we see Matthias in his final narrative chapter (which is only a few paragraphs). He's in an idealized version of his homeland (which may either be his entrance into Heaven or a Dying Dream), with his beloved wolves coming to welcome him home.
