Tear Jerker / Ophelia

Beware of unmarked spoilers

  • Ophelia learning that Hamlet was supposedly murdered on Claudius's order. It's at this point she hits rock bottom; her father is dead, her brother is far away, she's surrounded by enemies, Claudius - whom she knows is a murderer - is forcing her to marry a misogynistic scumbag and the love of her life is gone too. There's a brief montage of her wandering the fields outside the castle and standing on the battlements in despair, her hair and clothes bedraggled, clutching a bouquet of the flowers she loves so much. When Horatio approaches her on the battlements, he seems half-afraid she's going to throw herself off and it does seem like she's about to fully become The Ophelia. Then Horatio tells her that Hamlet still lives...
  • Ophelia and Laertes's interaction during her 'mad' scene, combined with Heartwarming. When Ophelia rushes into the room, having seemingly lost her mind to grief, Laertes looks utterly heartbroken; not only was his father killed, but he feels he failed to protect his sister. He gently urges her to come sit next to him, calling her "sweet sister". The audience knows Ophelia is actually faking her madness, but she can't let Laertes know this because of Claudius. She approaches him and gently places her forehead on his, silently letting him know that she loves him (she may also anticipate this may be her last chance to see him). Given Ophelia supposedly drowns herself not long after, this was the last time they ever interacted. Although Ophelia is Spared by the Adaptation this time around, the last time Laertes saw his sister alive he believed she'd suffered so much her mind had shattered.note
  • Hamlet and Ophelia's final goodbye. Hamlet is overjoyed to learn Ophelia is still alive, but when she begs him to run away with her while they still have time, he admits he can't let go of his desire to get revenge on Claudius after everything he's done. He says he is "sworn to vengeance", prompting a devastated Ophelia to counter "you swore to love me". Ultimately, they accept their fates and part ways, with Hamlet telling Ophelia he'll always love her. We see Ophelia walking stoically from the castle while Hamlet and her brother Laertes duel, both consumed with vengeance, knowing there's nothing she can do to save them.
  • Hamlet's death. He dies a slow death from poison in the arms of his devastated mother and in this version he succumbs to his poisoned wound before he can kill Claudius, so it was All for Nothing (although Gertrude takes up his sword instead to avenge him).
  • Laertes's death, which occurs alongside Hamlet's due to him being stabbed with his own poisoned blade. He knows he's screwed the moment Hamlet cuts him and doesn't seem to feel any kind of satisfaction in killing Hamlet. He dies alone, his vengeance having accomplished little, and he never finds out that his sister is actually still alive. In fact, Ophelia - disguised as a servant boy - had been standing right next to him prior to the duel and if only he hadn't been so blinded by vengeance, if only he'd looked up and seen her, he would've realized she was alive.
  • Gertrude downing a bottle of poison as Fortinbras's forces swarm the castle. She's lost everyone she loved and sees her own twin sister marching in with the invading army, bent on revenge. However, when Mechtild sees what her sister is doing, she quickly loses her anger and rushes towards her. Gertrude ends up dying in her sister's arms, both of them crying as they realize what their actions have led to and only getting a chance to truly reconcile in Gertrude's dying moments.
