"You're not like me. You're the good kid. And I'm just the kid that ruins everything."

  • Daniela, Luca's mom, not hesitating to opt to send Luca to the deep sea for a season or two after finding out Luca's been going above surface. Her paranoia with the dangers of the surface world is that extreme that she resorts to such drastic measures even when Luca has only been spending time on an uninhabited island and only with another sea monster.
    • Luca choosing to run away in order to escape this punishment. He's clearly not happy about it but sees no other choice.
  • Alberto's growing jealousy towards Luca spending more time with Giulia.
  • Alberto and Luca's fight also counts. It's sad to see them arguing after the bond they shared throughout the movie. It even turns physical at a point, with shoving and pushing and Alberto is even seen making a fist, raised to strike at Luca, that may have connected had Giulia not arrived on the scene.
Alberto: What are you going to do when she sees you? When ANYONE sees you!?
    • Alberto revealing his sea monster form to Giulia in an attempt to show Luca that the humans would not accept them if they attended her school because they're "sea monsters". Not only does Giulia react in fear (or more likely just shock, given that she later accepts Luca following his own reveal), proving Alberto's point, but what makes this worse is when Luca, unwilling to give himself up, pretends to act scared by crying out "Sea monster!" at Alberto to hide his own identity, leaving his friend shocked and heartbroken and forced to flee when Ercole shows up. The utter betrayal on his face when Luca does this, the devastation as he tries calling out to Luca again, only for Giulia to yell at him to stay back, is nothing short of heartbreaking.
      Alberto: (heartbroken) Luca...?
    • Ercole and his goons also throw their harpoons at Alberto when they show up. Luckily, they miss actually hitting him, but still. That could have gone even worse than the situation already was, and Luca still chose to hide himself during this.
      • Alberto barely reacts to the harpoons being thrown at him, which could mean he was either so upset at Luca that he didn't notice anything else, or he just didn't care if they hit him or not.
  • Giulia telling Luca to leave town for his own good when she discovers his sea monster heritage. While she doesn't react with fear/extreme shock like with Alberto's reveal and doesn't do it out of anger or bias against Luca (in fact, by her own admission, she is actually excited to learn that her friends are sea monsters), she knows that the townspeople have a strong negative perception of Luca's species to the point of hunting them for bounty, and only instructs him to leave because she can't stand to see him get hurt by any of them, especially her father, who is dying to catch a sea monster himself.
Giulia: Do you think I want you to leave? (choking up) This is the happiest I've... Look, it's just not worth it.
  • When Luca returns to the tower on the island to find Alberto, he finds Alberto's collection of human things thrown across the room and destroyed, heavily implied to have been by Alberto himself in his anger and hurt that Luca betrayed their friendship.
    • Luca finding the picture Alberto drew of the two of them torn in half.
  • When Luca finds Alberto at the top of the tower on the island, he tries to apologize, only for Alberto to coldly tell him that he gets the message and to go away.
Alberto: Yeah, whatever, you're sorry! Now, just go away!
  • Alberto reveals Luca that his father abandoned him for no apparent reason (other than implications of him being a failure), and that he had been living on his own for a long time.
Alberto: I stopped counting after a while. He said I was old enough to be on my own. I just thought that ...maybe he'd change his mind. Honestly though, I get it. He's better off without me. You are, too.
    • Try counting the marks. Alberto was there for over a year before he simply decided to stop counting.
    • Worse still, Alberto is too upset to accept any apologies Luca tries to make and keeps lashing out, going as far as to say they never should have been friends in the first place.
Alberto: (crying) And I'm just the kid who...ruins everything.
    • If you believe this quote, it can be assumed Alberto's dad left him for a petty reason: his son was just too clumsy.
  • Alberto being exposed to the townsfolk during the last event of the triathlon. Everyone sans Giulia is shocked and horrified at the sight of him, and Alberto, despite the front he puts up for Luca's sake, is shown just as terrified if not more so. Especially after Ercole throws a net on him and corners Alberto with full intent to kill him at this point.
  • Luca and Alberto splitting up for the school year at the end. Even though we know they'll meet again once the school year is over, seeing the boys tearfully hug each other goodbye will tug at the heartstrings.
Luca: How will I know you’ll be okay?
(Alberto hugs Luca and he hugs back)
Alberto: (voice breaking) You got me off the island, Luca. I’m okay.
