- General Flagg is killed in the Cobra attack on GI Joe headquarters in issue #19. General Hawk brings his dog tags as the Joes are celebrating what they think is a glorious victory over Cobra.
- In GI Joe #26, "Snake Eyes: The Origin", General Hawk comes to tell Snake Eyes that his sister and parents were killed by a drunk driver on their way to pick him up from the airport.
- The revelation that Billy is actually Cobra Commander's son and that the Baroness and Major Bludd have been (successfully) trying to convince him to kill his father.
- In GI Joe #42, Stalker visits the Vietnam Memorial and goes to look for friends that he isn't sure about whether they died or not.
- In GI Joe #43, Candy Appel, Billy, and a drunk driver get caught up in a Cobra ambush with the Hard Master trying to save them but failing in the proces. Candy and the driver end up killed, which drives the plot for several issues afterward.
- Ripcord and Professor Appel are both determined to find out her fate with the audience left with the impression that Candy might still be alive. Instead, Professor Appel dies trying to save Ripcord so he can find out.
- During the evacuation of Springfield in #50, a family tries to stop their father from killing their family dog as he's been ordered to leave it behind by Cobra. Seeing the cuddly red dog and the gun pointed at it is worse than anything Cobra has done before (and arguably since for dog lovers).
