Tear Jerker / Franklin Lost Episode: Otter's Sickness

Go To

  • Franklin's reaction to finding out that Otter is sick with the flu, thus preventing him from seeing her for the weekend.
  • Otter's parents telling Franklin's parents about Otter's fatal sickness.
Mr. Turtle: I think the flu might have completely gone away, hasn't it?
Mr. Otter: Honestly, I'm not really too sure how long that's gonna last, though.
Mrs. Turtle: Wait a minute. What do you mean by that? Isn't Otter feeling better? She looked completely fine when she ran back here.
Mr. Otter: (Glancing over to the back window to see Franklin and Otter playing) There was something that we didn't mention during our phone call last week.
Mr. Turtle: Well, what is it?
Mr. Otter: When we took Otter to the Doctor last week because of her flu symptoms, we... we found out that there was... much more than just that. The Doctors there had run a couple of blood tests after the first one was find to have some kind of odd bacteria in it. Otter's primary doctor did another test and we soon found that there was something... something much worse than a flu virus in Otter.
Mrs. Turtle: Oh my goodness! What was it?
Mr. Otter: It turns out the bacteria was a disease. A nasty one at that. At first, we didn't think that it would be that bad, but after a little while at the Doctor's office, he told us that the disease itself was something that even he himself didn't know what it was, nor could any of the doctors themselves figure out what it is. But one thing that was certainly true was that... (Beginning to choke up) ...it was... it was confirmed to be fatal.
Mrs. Otter: Normally in this situation, the doctors would have kept her in the hospital for treatment, and that was what we were originally going to do, but... the doctors told us that it was already terminal for her. The disease itself had supposedly been in her body for most of her life remaining dormant. And only now has it decided to spread. And it was spreading so... so much, that... there was nothing that they can do. Even now, it's still taking a toll on her.
Mr. Turtle: How... how long does she have?
Mr. Otter: (Crying his eyes out) She only has about... 3 months left.
  • Franklin overhearing his parents' conversation about Otter's fatal disease, especially when he learns that Otter has known about her disease all this time. He breaks down crying outside the door, which attracts the attention of his parents.
Mrs. Turtle: Franklin! Franklin, what's wrong?
    Franklin: Otter...
Mrs. Turtle: What about her, Franklin? Did she... did she do something?
Franklin: No... Otter... Why... why... why is she going to die?
    (Franklin's parents look shocked)
Mrs. Turtle: Franklin! How did you know?
Franklin: I heard everything that you were all talking about when I walked in to go use the bathroom. Is it true? Is Otter going to die?
Mrs. Turtle: Aw, Franklin. (Sighs) We... we're not too sure.
Franklin: But... Mr. Otter said that she'd only have about three months!
Mrs. Turtle: Franklin, sweetie... Otter... (Sighs) Otter just isn't feeling too well. It's... it's difficult to say, Franklin.
Franklin: Why didn't you tell me? You had heard about it, why didn't you say anything?
Mrs. Turtle: We... we were both... we were all going to sit down and talk about it tomorrow, but... Oh, Franklin, we're so sorry! (Holds Franklin close to her)
  • Immediately after the above moment, Franklin breaks out of his mother's embrace and rushes into Otter's room where he continues crying.
  • The very next day, Franklin brutally chews Otter out for lying to him about the real reason she had to take her medicine.
Franklin: You really think that, don't you?
    Otter: What?
Franklin: You really don't think that lying to your friend is anything wrong?
Otter: Franklin, wh... what are you talking about?
Franklin: You told me that you were going to take your medicine for the flu, but that wasn't true, was it?
(Otter turns her head away from Franklin)
Otter: Well, I did need to take them for my flu, Franklin, I just... I just got better, and I-
Franklin: Don't lie to me, Otter! It wasn't for the flu! It wasn't for that! It was to keep you energized and happy while that disease you have in you slowly kills you!
(A single tear rolls down Franklin's face)
Otter: How... how did you know about...
Franklin: Mom told me. I heard everything actually. I heard everything. The real truth, I guess, is that you have that little disease in your body, and there's no way to cure it! And that you're gonna pass away soon!
    Otter: Franklin, I... I...
Franklin: No! Not only did you lie to me when you said that you were going to take your medicine for the flu, but you lied to me now! When you said that that was what you were doing when it wasn't! Why would you lie to me, Otter? Why would you not tell me the truth? More importantly, why wouldn't you tell me the truth for a whole week!? Why, Otter!?
Otter: (Starting to choke up) I'm sorry, Franklin! I didn't want to scare you! I just... I just didn't want to feel sad that I was sick and I... I just...
Franklin: (Huffs) That's not an excuse, Otter! You're supposed to be my best friend! Friends don't lie to their best friends about something that serious, Otter!
Otter: (On the verge of tears) But... I am your friend, Franklin! I'm sorry! I... I should have told you! It wasn't right of me!
Franklin: You did hurt me, Otter! You did hurt me! (Leaves the room)
(Otter lies down on her bed and starts crying)
