- The music that plays during the latter portion of Chapter 5 has seemingly unintelligible speaking. As it turns out, when the audio is reversed, it becomes coherent.
It’s Madeline talking about her depression, and what she says is utterly despairing.Sometimes, I don't really know what's going on anymore. I don't know who I am. I just look in the mirror, and don't know who I'm looking at. Or who's looking at me. I think a lot about where my train of thought is going. And it's not always a good place. And that scares me. I don't like scaring myself. I don’t... [sobbing]- The monologue was recorded by composer Lena Raine, sitting alone in a closet with a recorder, just trying to feel out what Madeline was going through.
- Between Chapter 8 and Chapter 9, Granny dies, and Madeline is too devastated to attend her funeral. Then she becomes obsessed with the idea of bringing her back, believing the tutorial bird to be part of her and thus the key to achieving this goal. This drives a wedge between Madeline and Badeline, and the latter abandons her at the start of Chapter 9.
- Right before the final sections of Chapter 9, Madeline slowly falls into despair, with the music of the Temporary Platform sections doling out a feeling of bleakness. Before she reconciles with Badeline, Madeline briefly contemplates suicide over the irreversible loss of Granny, leaving Badeline terrified.
