  • Papyrus entering Please Wake Up mode when Sans was faking being dead after Chara threw a knife at him. More specifically, the ketchup bottle inside his coat-pocket.
  • Chara only views the worst parts of people as a whole, including themself. Especially themself.
  • Sans blames himself for almost killing Toriel when he was possessed by Chara.
  • Toriel blames herself for Chara and Asriel's deaths. After the events of Red Echoes, she goes into full on Stepford Smiler mode, staying up all night baking pies and having terrible nightmares about the deaths.
  • Pretty much Frisk's past from before they climbed Mt. Ebott. Frisk had emotionally abusive Parents. The only part of their birth family that cared for them, their older sister: Aidrian, got kicked out of the house, and so they ran away to Mt. Ebott and the rest we know.
  • Aidrian thinks that Frisk, her little sibling, is dead. She really took their disappearance hard. In fact, in the Extra Dark Chocolate arc, one asker asked Aidrian and Jason if either of them were in to anime, Aidrian becomes literally the happiest we've ever seen her and goes into how she was the former president of the anime club of her high school. It was just heart-wrenching seeing that bright and happy mood she had die off in mere moments when she accidentally brings up Frisk.
  • Maverick is an adult Asriel from a world that has most likely been erased as of now. At first it he only let on part of what happened in the future when one person asked what would've happened if he failed to save Aidrian. He let the askers know that humans were already afraid of monsters. A senseless murder like what was just prevented would've simply confirmed those fears. He said what was worse was how it would've affected Frisk. What little more he said about there being nothing left to go back to in his world, and that poetry he wrote and saved into the flash drive he left behind at Frisk's house lets us know he could be the Sole Survivor of the destruction of his universe.
    • Most of the implications of Maverick's universe are more Nightmare Fuel than Tear Jerker, but that doesn't change the fact that everyone is dead. Probably the worst is what apparently happened to Napstablook: when asked how a ghost could die, Word of God responded: of a broken heart.
      • Chara definitely hit Maverick the most. They kept his spirts up during the apocalypse they were stuck in, before the abominations that now roamed the world eventually murdered Chara. Saddest of all, it’s even revealed Maverick and Chara were lovers...
  • Alphys talking about her fathers: they died in an explosion at the Core.
  • Maverick is Lv 3. It just shows that while Maverick escaped one hell of having an incomplete soul, he did have to endure another hell. And in that new hell...It's kill or be killed.
    • And then we finally start learning details of Maverick's universe. Aidrian was murdered, which was said to profoundly affect Frisk, Undyne gets murdered after a group of humans attacks Monster Town, and the apocalypse happened, and Chara is killed by the abominations that result from it, seemingly taking everyone but Maverick.
  • Chara's Dark and Troubled Past. Chara used to live with loving parents until one day, pirates came and raided their village. They took Chara, a child, as a trophy. One day, they realized nobody was going to save them, so they took a knife and slit the throats of their captors the night they drank themselves to sleep.
  • Chara's Despair Event Horizon. They don't see the point of anything they've done anymore, and just when ADC!Frisk is showing them mercy, two asks show up to coldly urge them to keep going, leading to Chara vanishing.
    • When next we see Chara, they have seemingly undergone Trauma-Induced Amnesia—whether it was intentional or not is uncertain—and they seem to be happier thinking that their false identity is real.
  • The Yellow Soul, Blake's backstory. When they fell into the Underground with a gun and used blanks to scare monsters away from them. Unfortunately, when they encountered Hermann the found that one of their bullets was very real. The resulting guilt lead to them screwing up during their fight with Asgore and dying. Blake still carries a grudge to this day because they weren't able to understand how Asgore killed six times on purpose and, seemingly, didn't feel the same pain and guilt they did.
  • The protesters in front of Monsterworld.
Angry Mob: DEMONS BELONG IN HELL!
    • Also, the fact that this phrase being shouted is how Frisk recognizes the presence of their mom.
  • Frisk's reaction to being deadnamed.
    • Also, Janet's My God, What Have I Done? reaction when she realizes what she did.
      Janet: oh no...oh no oh no I'm so sorry...Frisk...it's all true isn't it...my god...and I...
      • Worst of all, it's not even Janet's fault. She was just fed bad information by Susan. It shouldn't her fault for acting on what she thought was true. I mean, let's be honest here. Who wouldn't trust a mother when it comes to her kid?
  • The Journey Into Mt. Ebott ride depicts all of Undertale and the game's backstory...including the sad parts. With the extra touch of an engraving dedicated to the six fallen children.
  • Callallied/Chara's self-hatred resurfaces along with their memories. To drive the point home, Flowey gives a line that gives a grim implication for a potential reason Callallied fled to the top floor of a building.
  • It was speculated, and eventually confirmed by Word of God, that the reason Chara started killing in Frisk's body was because of their LV shooting back to where it was when Chara killed the pirates in their sleep. The first kill was purely unintentional and solely for Frisk's protection, as in the game, you could fight the monsters and beat them til they're low HP and spare them. Then that first kill happened, Chara gained a "rush of power" and felt driven to kill.
    • Worst of all, they have no idea about their EXP. Their stats were masked as they possessed Frisk. Because we could never check Chara's stats in the game, only Frisk's. It's easy to assume all the EXP goes to Frisk in that position, or if it didn't just go to Frisk, Chara kept controlling Frisk's body. It's also easy to assume you have a screw loose if you started killing and every reason why is masked from you. For all Chara knew, all the EXP went to Frisk. It's no wonder they think they're a sick dog that needs to be put down.
  • Pretty much, Sans not being particularly thrilled with Chara being welcomed back following their Heel–Face Turn, which culminated into him threatening Chara's life via time-stop and keeping night watch over them as they sleep. Now, does he have good reasons to be angry about them being welcomed back? Yes. In all fairness, they did kill everyone he loved in an alternate timeline in their "LV rush" before it was all reset. Anyone would be moooore than a little salty in Sans' situation. It was to be expected of Sans to not immediately forgive Chara. It'll likely take time before he even considers forgiving them. That being said, is Sans acting about his anger towards them in an absolutely stupid way that's unhelpful for anyone? Yes.
  • When Undyne talks to Asgore about needing to reinstate the Royal Guard, Papyrus finally learns that Undyne doesn't want him in the Royal Guard because he would just die because he's too nice. The look he gives Undyne only sells it even more that his dreams were just absolutely shattered.
