Tear Jerker / A Plague Tale: Requiem

Go To

Much like its predecessor, A Plague Tale: Requiem is chock-full of gut punching moments that frequently border between devastatingly tragic and straight-up Nightmare Fuel.

  • The game starts some months after the end of Innocence and Hugo's sickness is no closer to being cured: in fact efforts to treat it end up making things worse.
  • We discover the final fate of Basilius, the Carrier of the Prima Macula before Hugo: he was subjected to inhumane experimentation by the Order, who then separated him from his protector and locked him up and left him to die. Judging by the size of his corpse, he couldn't have been any older than six.
  • Hugo has recognized that death and destruction follows him wherever he goes, whether he purposefully uses his powers or not. He blames himself for the innocent lives taken by the rats, and admits to Amicia that he's scared of himself.
  • Even if he's a complete Jerkass, Count Victor's anguished and desperate screams upon seeing his beloved wife Emilie being killed by the rats are too heartbreaking to be ignored. Later, the heroes hear the soldiers talking about how the Count won't be present at Arnaud's hanging because he is occupied with his wife's burial.
  • Throughout the game Hugo becomes increasingly violent, coming to a head when the Countess kills his mother, causing him to take control of the rats to destroy what's left of La Cuna, followed quickly by him believing that Amicia was killed as well. As a result he gives in completely to the Macula and unleashes millions, if not billions of rats, destroying the city of Marseilles in the process and threatening the rest of the world in the process. In the end Amicia is forced to kill him for the good of all, including Hugo himself.
    • Worse if the player waits long enough Amicia falls to her knees and tells Lucas that she just can’t do it. Lucas then takes it upon himself and it very clear that he’s having just as hard a time but manages to push through it while Amicia can only yell heart wrenching “NO” as Lucas fires the arrow to put Hugo out of his misery and stop the plague.
  • As sweet as it is to hear, both for the player and Amicia, but the last of Hugo's consciousness that is still sane within the Nebula tells her that he loves her and that their time spent together had been the world to him, and it is devastating in that moment because you know by then that it is Hugo's last farewell to her.
