Iron Man

  • Look closely at the invoices on Obadiah Stane's computer. One of them is full of references to The Big Lebowski, which Jeff Bridges starred in as The Dude. The "Special Cargo Instructions" section has phrases in the text like "the parlance of our times" and "rugs that tie the room together."
  • The Iron Man-Iron Monger fight in the first one, and the entirety of the failed armor sequence in the second, are homages to similar scenes in RoboCop 2. The director even makes a comment on it on the second film's DVD commentary.

Iron Man 2

  • In Monaco, Happy is shown carrying a case which, when Tony activates it, deploys a limited-use version of the Iron Man suit (it has much less armor and doesn't seem to have flight capability). In the comics up until around the late 90s, Tony typically kept the suit hidden in the false bottom of his briefcase (the comic suit used to be basically metallic fabric reinforced by a magnetic field, and could be folded like clothing).
  • When Tony is drunk-piloting his suit, the partygoers first start throwing booze bottles into the air for him to shoot at. Then one of the girls shows up with a whole watermelon. Tony literally shouts out, "I think she wants the Gallagher!"
  • Self proclaimed comic book geek Howard Stern heavily promoted the first Iron Man film on his radio show, even interviewing director and casual friend Jon Favreau. In an interview on one of Stern's satellite radio channels during the promotion of Iron Man 2, Favreau confirmed that the foul-mouthed Senator Stern from Iron Man 2 was in fact a shout-out to his friend, the foul-mouthed non-Senator Howard Stern.
  • In the novelisation, some of the proposed names for the to-be War Machine include Terminator, Silver Surfer and Captain America.
  • The scene in Iron Man 2 in which Happy Hogan bites a security guard's ear during a clinch is a reference to when Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield's ear during a boxing match.

Iron Man 3

  • Tony refers to Savin as Westworld during their first fight.
  • A kid who looks like Ralphie from A Christmas Story asks for Tony's autograph and he mentions this film by name. One of the producers and actors in Iron Man is Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie in A Christmas Story (he plays Stane's chief technician in the "Built this IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!" scene).
  • At one point, Happy refers to the Avengers as the Super Friends.
  • Tony calls Trevor "Meryl Streep".
    • He also refers to him as “Sir Laurence Oblivier”
  • Happy's favorite show is Downton Abbey and Tony has it play on his hospital TV. More specifically, Branson and Lady Sybil.
  • During a fight, Iron Man is pinned down by rubble and has to defend himself with a spike that extends from his arm. It has almost the exact blocking and camera angle as a similar scene in RoboCop.
  • At one point, Stark starts having a panic attack and adds "ERIN HELP ME" to a young fan's drawing of Iron Man while autographing it.
  • Harley gives Tony a Dora the Explorer watch.
