Provides examples of:
- Ambivalent Anglican: The reverend who shows up in the first episode is actually a former surgeon who had a breakdown and was only allowed back in the hospital as a chaplain. Sister Hope scoffs at the idea of him being a chaplain who "doesn't even believe in God." Dr Noble shrugs this off and says it's alright since he's C of E.
- Everybody Smokes: Played for Laughs. All the nurses are smokers.
- Everything Except Most Things: The porter mentions that he's been as busy as a bee, except for the fact that he doesn't have pollen sacs in his groin.
- Must Have Caffeine: Dr Noble extols the virtues of coffee, claiming that the entire NHS would collapse without it.
- Never Heard That One Before: One episode has a subplot involving a phlebotomist (played by Adrian Scarborough) being driven insane after decades of hearing people making references to the Hancock's Half Hour episode "The Blood Donor" ("A pint? That's nearly an armful!").
- Welcome Episode: The first episode takes place during Laurence's first shift where he meets his new colleagues for the first time.
