The Odd Jobs Hero is an Anti-Hero archetype that becomes involved in the story because of their odd jobs profession. The common characteristics of this archetype include:

  • The Protagonist (and almost always a male one).
  • Chaotic Good morality.
  • An orphan, occasionally with some kind of Dark and Troubled Past.
  • A Private Detective, Bounty Hunter, Drifter, Vigilante Man, or something similar (or a combination of some) that revolves around odd jobs. Their position can put them in conflict with authority.
  • A badass or otherwise very cool.
  • Particularly lazy and irresponsible, but devoted to his work.
  • Has a dry or sarcastic, and often rude exterior. Nevertheless, he's kinder and more altruistic than he initially comes across as.
  • Laid-back most of the time, but can become bold and passionate in times of crisis.
  • A Pragmatic decision-maker.
This character can be wildly popular with fans when done right. Contrast Punch-Clock Hero, who will only do the good that they're paid to do and can work in other fields. Compare Knight Errant, can fit as an Odd Jobs Hero, but the typical example of a Knight Errant falls more under Lawful Good than Chaotic Good. Note that his position and his approach towards it is the core of the archetype and forms the basis of it. While they are motivated by earning money, it is not their primary motivation, which is to do good. They also have a strong code of ethics, so there are clear lines that will not cross. Thus, the Odd Jobs Hero cannot be a Private Military Contractors or a Psycho for Hire. They will not take hitman jobs and will only kill someone if they deem that they have to during their job.

  • Only from a quick glance, as I haven't gotten into this piece of media. Take this with some salt.

    Anime & Manga
  • Gintama: Gintoki Sakata. He runs Yorozuya Odd Jobs and is usually behind on paying rent due to a lack of consistent business, often spending his free time enjoying sweets, reading Shonen Jump, or losing money playing pachinko. Nonetheless, he's a badass that's very determined to get the job done and doing the right thing.
  • Vash the Stampede from Trigun Stampede is a badass gunslinger that's very depressed and lonely. He drifts around, helping people out and trying to earn money whoever he can. He also refuses to kill anyone, regardless of the consequences.*
  • Yato from Noragami is arrogant, self-centered, and irresponsible, aiming to build a shrine for himself (since he's a god). He works towards this by taking on a lot of odd jobs, helping people in the process. And, he's surprisingly easygoing, considering his past.*
  • Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran: the titular character is a female example of this archetype. She's an easygoing Ronin that scours around looking for money, and will bring herself to help people out when they're in need of it.*
    Video Games
  • The protagonist of the Trails SeriesCalvard arc is Van Arkride, a private detective that resides in the country's capital. His life revolves around the odd jobs he takes on, typically jobs on matters that can't be take to the traditional, lawful factions of the Bracer Guild and the police..
  • Tales of Vesperia's protagonist, Yuri Lowell, is a Vigilante Man that decided to take the matter of the law into his own hands for the sake of the greater good after becoming disgusting and filled with ire towards the cruel nobility. He end ups helping lots of people along the way, more so because of his Chronic Hero Syndrome than anything else.
