Half-Life: Sum takes place during and after the resonance cascade in which you play as the tough as nails HECU grunt Jane Doe as she has to wade through 11 sprawling maps.

Tropes:

  • Bag of Spilling: Jane loses all her gear several times throughout the game.
  • Genre Shift: The mod starts out as your typical shooter with occassional horror elements. As the game goes on, the horror gradually takes over.
  • Howl of Sorrow: Several can be occasionally heard when the game takes a darker turn. Though they're not played for the sadness but rather for the horror.
  • Shout-Out:
    • There are numerous Duke Nukem posters as well as the game itself running on one PC you find. You can even interact with it to give cash to the pole dancer to which Duke's typical quip is heard.
    • On another PC you can find running the first installment of Blood, namely the scene with Draven's grave. Using the PC makes Caleb say Nevermore.
  • There's Doom poster hanging in Jane's home.
  • Then a hole cracks in her bathroom wall with a portal.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: At least once you get to ride an elevator with human blood and guts splattered all over the floor. The ride is accompanied by chipper Elevator Music.
  • Spooky Animal Sounds: When the game takes a darker turn, a distant howl is heard occassionally.
  • Teleporting Keycard Squad: Once you get your hands on the briefcase the G-man sent you after, several Black Ops inexplicably appear in the previously visited room and the facility begins swarming with Xenizens.
