Playable Characters Pre-timeskip

    Schwarze

Schwarze - Legendary Black Knight

Class: Lord

The main hero of the story alongside Noir. While most knights prefer swords or spears, he is unusual among them in which he prefers massive blades. Wielding his custom-made Seiken, he eventually discovers a horrible truth that shakes his loyalty to the country of Kalm...

  • Action Hero: A lord who is capable of defending not just himself, but also is instrumental in deciding the fate of Lumae alongside Noir.
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: At one point, Schwarze offers Josephine a yucca leaf beverage. Noir later downright states to him that the beverages contained cyanide poison. He's actually surprised to find out he developed a good resistance to it.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Between the 3 years and 6 months of the timeskip, he managed to barely survive Grey's attack on him. However, he was unable to remember most of his memories and went by the name Montblanc until one of the remnants of the Black Knights called him by his name, causing him to remember everything.
  • Art Evolution: His post-timeskip portrait isn't unique, though after the V1.11 patch, it notably looks much better in the eyes thanks to being drawn by Yasako.
  • Big Damn Heroes: His appearance in Chapter 18 Part 3 has him saving Noir from Weissholdt reinforcements while revealing the fact that he wasn't actually dead.
  • BFS: Wields Seiken, which is a bigger version of a Rapier, and most of his class animations have him wielding swords that are huge. He later gets access to Seiken+, which is a souped-up version of Seiken capable of hitting 1-2 range, and Knell, which is an unbreakable version of Knell.
  • Character Development: He becomes less reckless throughout the chapters, and becomes more knowledgeable from his actions. His A-ranked support with Noir lampshades this.
  • Colorful Theme Naming: His name is German for "black". Not only does it describe his skin tone, but it also is fitting for the leader of the Black Knights.
  • Combat Medic: In his B-rank support conversation with Noir, he tries to bandage one of his wounds. Key word tries, as Noir notes that he didn't even disinfect the wound, and she hopes that Schwarze learns how to use a healing staff. If Schwarze promotes to Knight Lord, he can.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: After the tragic events in Zoyla that ended with Helman dead and Grey missing, combined with a letter that contained both orders to afflict Zoyla with an enchanted Berserk staff, along with a signature that belonged to King Adam, he begins to doubt his loyalties to the Kingdom of Kalm. Depending on what decision he makes, he either defies Vert's orders or reluctantly proceeds with them, but he will defect regardless.
  • Cool Mask: Wears one in his Weiss disguise, which looks oddly familiar to the hack's creator's avatar.
  • The Hero Dies: Subverted in Chapter 17, where he barely survives Grey's attack, but it's played straight on Ending E and the Black Knights version of Ending D, where in the former is killed by a massive ton of angry Weissholdt soldiers, and in the latter has to be killed by Noir due to Layton's machinations. He can also die in Ending F, but that ending requires you to screw up HARD.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His main weapon proficiency is Swords.
  • Ironic Name: His disguise, Weiss, is German for white. He still tends to wear dark clothing in that disguise.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: His Fatal Flaw. His recklessness tends to nearly cost him his life. If an angry Schwarze kills Alliser, not only this will result in the Council of Seven removing the Black Knight's sovereignty, but also results in having to trade Mithra for the Lucifer Comet depending on his choice, and on certain circumstances, locks out Ending B. If he decides to attempt to kill Vert in Chapter 16 while he is silenced, this results in him being killed.
  • Lightning Bruiser: His growths in Strength, Skill, Speed and Defense are very good overall.
  • The Lost Lenore: A non-supported Schwarze will always have Lauren to be this. Additionally, any A-support with the exception of Artemisa who dies in combat aside from Noir will be this to him, and even Noir can die in one path.
  • Magic Knight: He has surprisingly decent growths in Magic as well. However, he leans towards the Knight version of this trope, since he has higher growths in Strength.
  • Meaningful Name: Knell, his Infinity +1 Sword, is the sound of a bell when rung solemnly for a death or a funeral. Not only does it perfectly describe what happens to him or Noir in Route D, it also describes Talion's murder of Kalm over the new weapon he created.
  • Red Baron: Is known as the Undying Knight for surviving a two-story fall from a tower. It becomes an Ironic Nickname in Endings D, E, and F.
  • Soldier vs. Warrior: The Warrior to Noir's Soldier. Schwarze not only tends to prefer combat and backs it up with unparalleled combat skill to boot, while Noir is more thoughtful in her actions. This is referenced with their promotion paths: While Schwarze's promotions tend to prefer up-close and physical combat with the exception of the Knight Lord class, which does offer Light Magic (and even then, his Magic growth is a bit unstable), while Noir's promotions are perfectly adaptable to every combat situation, with Grandmaster offering support and combat bonuses, while Spectre combines both her strength and magic into a deadly mixture of damage.
  • Sword Plant: His map animations and magic sword combat animations has him planting a sword into the ground.
  • Tempting Fate: His A-ranked support with Artemisa has him thinking that nothing can separate him from her anymore. One guess on what happens to her in Chapter 16.

Noir - Legendary Black Knight

Class: Commander

The main heroine of the story alongside Schwarze. Considered by many in Kalm to be one of the most adaptive members of the Holy Knights,

  • Armored But Frail: A variant: In spite of being an armored unit with good Defense and Resistance growths, she has an below-average HP growth, meaning that she can only be a true Lightning Bruiser with significant Angelic Robe investment or promoting her multiple times.
  • Casting a Shadow: Aside from using dark magic initially, she comes with Gawain, which compensates for it being 1-ranged for effective damage against cavalry and armors, essentially making it a magical Rapier. She later gains access to Avalon, which is an unbreakable and juiced-up version of Gawain, essentially making her an instant death button against cavalry and armors if she reaches them.
  • Dragon Rider: Can become this if she promotes into Naga's Fang.
  • Kryptonite Is Everywhere: If she promotes into Naga's Fang, every effective weapon in the game aside from anti-monster weapons will deal a good amount of damage against her.
