Call of the Mountain is a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Alternate Universe Fic by Krixwell, and a prequel to Heart of the Forest. It is the second entry in the Harmonys Chosen series to be published, but the first chronologically. It can be found on Fimfiction, Offprint, and AO3.

While visiting the Pie family on the outskirts of Griffonstone, Rainbow Dash the griffon feels drawn towards a cave, where she finds the long-lost Idol of Boreas. Unfortunately, Gilda wants her claws on it as well.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change: Rainbow Dash's father is called Bow Hotpaw, because he doesn't have hooves.
  • The Exile: At the end, following their disastrous and publicly outed attempt to steal the Idol of Boreas, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie are forced to flee Griffonstone and head to Equestria. Gilda, the city's new ruler, doesn't really want to send them away, but for the time being it is no longer safe for them to be in or near the city.
  • Fantastic Racism: Griffon society is divided into two main groups, the eagle griffons of Griffonstone and the lynx griffins of the mountains, who predate the city's founding and spell their species' name differently. Lynx griffins aren't very welcome in eagle griffon society, and when the Idol of Boreas goes missing, the eagle griffins are very quick to blame the lynx griffins' supposedly untrustworthy natures and form into a lynch mob.
  • Noodle Incident: After the dinner at the Pie household, the family starts telling stories to pass the evening. As the narration is more focused on Rainbow's internal drama, this results in the conversation being depicted as a series of disconnected, context-less comments mostly in the form of the endings of implicitly long or complex stories.
"And let me tell you, crystal bats are not a pleasant surprise in your outhouse. He never tried that recipe again."

"...well, turns out there was a Fell Spar Cat outside on the roof, with pads and all. Horace must have sensed it. Just goes to show, never argue with a cheese."
